John Rossiter Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants for the John Rossiter Memorial Scholarship must be registered and working as a paramedic or in a paramedic support role (instructor, coordinator, administration, etc.)

Registered paramedics must be accepted into an educational program offered at a post-secondary institution (Medavie HealthEd or otherwise) on either a full-time, part-time or distance basis (as defined by the institution). An acceptance letter from the educational institution or confirmation of attendance will be required to apply for the scholarship.

How to Apply

  1. Download and fill out the application form
  2. Identify the course in which you are enrolled and attach your acceptance letter from that educational institution (scanned to PDF)
  3. Include a resume and cover letter describing why you feel you are deserving of the scholarship and how this educational opportunity might benefit you or your profession (MS Word documents)
  4. Include two letters of reference from someone who is not a relative, one professional, one personal (MS Word document or scanned to PDF)
  5. Complete an essay from one of the topics posted below:
  • In paramedicine there is a significant amount of team work, working in pairs, and working with other outside agency members.  Please describe why you are well suited for these settings.
  • What role(s) does Paramedicine play as part of the health care system and how can Paramedics contribute to that changing system?
  • We talk a lot about post-traumatic stress disorder, but is there such a thing as post traumatic growth?  Is it possible that positive changes can come from seemingly devastating events?  Explain.

The essay mu st be between 1,000 and 1,500 words in length (double-spaced). Only essays in MS Word format will be accepted.

All scholarship awardees will be notified personally and their names will be announced on the Medavie HealthEd website.

John Rossiter Field Leadership Award
Award value: $600 course credit at Dalhousie University College of Continuing Education

*Please note that this academic award will be distributed once per year. Applicants may apply to both awards through Dalhousie University College of Continuing Education, however an awardee will not be eligible to win both awards in the same year.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants for the John Rossiter Field Service award must be a practicing paramedic with at least two years’ experience in the field. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate their leadership record. Eligible applicants include:

  • Supervisors
  • Senior operating paramedics
  • Clinical development paramedics
  • Field training paramedics
  • People sitting on clinical related committees (equipment standards, vehicle user group, etc.)
  • Preceptors
  • Educators at schools (lab facilitators, instructors, etc.)
  • Involvement in paramedic research projects (as investigator, designer, research assistant, presenter, etc.)

In addition to meeting the above criteria, applicants must submit:

  1. Award application form
  2. A 1-2 page write-up (maximum 700 words) on:
    • Why you chose to become a leader
    • How being a leader has enriched your career
    • How this award will contribute to your professional development/career path
    • How you motivate/inspire others to reach their own leadership potential
  3. ONE letter of reference regarding your leadership experience (not from a family member)
  4. Current supervisor’s contact information

John Rossiter Community Service Award
Award value: $600 course credit at Dalhousie University College of Continuing Education

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants for the John Rossiter Community Service award must be a practicing paramedic with at least two years’ experience in the field. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate their involvement in the community. Some activities could include but are not limited to the following:

  • Volunteering as a paramedic in the community (parades, food/toy drives, school/group visits, seniors’ expos, health fairs, etc.)
  • Involvement in public education programs/committees (paramedic related public education, P.A.R.T.Y program, safe driving programs, injury prevention programs, helmet safety, etc.)
  • Involvement in Patient Safety Week or EMS Week
  • Involvement with other ‘health’ related organizations (Canadian Red Cross, St. John Ambulance, Emergency Management Office, etc.)
  • Taking part in fundraisers to help health/wellness related groups/charities
  • Involvement in community or public relations related committees

In addition to meeting the above criteria, applicants must submit:

  1. Award application form

    • How that services has enriched your career
    • How this award will contribute to your professional development/career path
    • How you motivate/inspire others to get involved in community projects
